Be fair to the world, life healthy, eat seasonal!

In times of globalization and interconnected global markets you can buy every kind of vegetable or fruit all around the world and in every season of the year. Exotic and untypical fresh groceries made a long way to wait in your supermarket for you. Have you ever thought about how the mangos came from Latin America to Hamburg? They got conserved or iced so that they overcome the long travel. Containerships or cargo airplanes travelled around half around the earth, just because for us and our food desires.

But is that really necessary? Do we really have to eat mangos in December? Is this desire so urgent that whole containerships have to be weeks on the oceans for it? I think we underestimate our regional fruits and vegetables. Germany has a huge farming industry and has so many beautiful farming areas like for example the old land (Altes Land), where you can find delicious apples and pears. Besides that there is a huge mushroom and asparagus farming industry in Germany. To say it in the words of Game of Thrones, “Winter is coming” and the cold and cozy season begins. Forget strawberries, raspberries or asparagus. And if you find them now in the supermarket, believe me, it doesn’t taste like the regional german strawberries and asparagus. You will be disappointed, for sure! So whatch out for our german winter stars like mushrooms, chicory, kale, brussels sprouts, swedes, red cabbage, morrons, beetroot, apples, pears or quinces. And there a lot more!

You don’t know which kind of fruits and vegetables are currently in season? Just take a look on the lovely and useful blog from UK “Eat Seasonably”. It includes a practicable calendar, where you can easily look up, what grows currently in you region as you can see here: (http://eatseasonably.co.uk/what-to-eat-now/calendar/)
